OCR: HISTORICAL OVERVIEW The years leading up to World War I were filled with unrest among the powers of Europe. Russia was still hurting from her bitter defeat at the hands of the Japanese in 1905. Austria had absorbed some minor Balkan states into her empire, and wished to expand. French and Ger- man generals spent much of their time planning the strategies that would once and for all solve the conflict between the two nations. It was a time when the leaders of countries diplomatically vied for allies to support them when the Great War started. The greatest unrest seemed to involve the French and the Germans.
